The Delhi University administration in an arbitrary and shameful manner called for a press conference to announce the registration for M.Phil And PhD from the 12th of June without even releasing the information bulletin and proposed intake in both the courses for the academic session year 2017-18. It was also announced that admission to M.Phil and PhD courses will be based on Interview (Viva-Voice) and the written examination will only be a mere qualifier. It is imperative to be mentioned here that this decision has not been ratified by the academic council and executive council of the university.
Admissions to M.Phil and PhD courses in DU were based earlier on Ordinance VI and VI-B respectively which gave 85% weightage to written examination and 15% to viva-voice for PhD and 30% weightage for the eligible qualification(Marks in Master’s Degree), 15% for interview and 55% for written test in case of M.Phil which website of Delhi University still continues to mention.
An inquiry committee headed by a JNU professor, Abdul Nafey, had confirmed discrimination against students from marginalised sections in oral interviews and had also recommended to bring down the weithtage of interview marks to 10%.
This move will affect a large section of students from marginalised sections and vernacular language backgrounds. Further the unavailability of information bulletin has created an ambiguous and chaotic situation for the students.
The Delhi State Committee of SFI condemns the unprofessional and anti student move of Delhi University administration and demands to immediately withdraw the arbitrary changes in the admission process of M.Phil and PhD courses and release the information bulletin on an urgent basis.
